Manchester City secured a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Nottingham Forest on Sunday, keeping the pressure on Premier League leaders Arsenal. The win, achieved with a clinical display from substitute Erling Haaland, maintains City’s title hopes despite a far from convincing performance.

Haaland, returning from a two-game injury layoff, marked his comeback with a goal in the 71st minute, expertly placing the ball into the bottom left corner after a scramble in the box. This vital goal ensured City remained just a point behind Arsenal, who had secured a win against Tottenham earlier that day.

Prior to Haaland’s introduction in the 62nd minute, City had struggled to break down a resolute Forest defense. The visitors took the lead midway through the first half thanks to a towering header from Josko Gvardiol. The Croatian defender rose above a static Forest backline to meet Kevin De Bruyne’s pinpoint corner, leaving Forest goalkeeper Dean Henderson with no chance.

Forest’s misery was compounded just before the City goal when Neco Williams was forced off the field due to an injury sustained during a challenge. Nuno Espirito Santo’s men, however, displayed commendable spirit throughout the match. They disrupted City’s rhythm with a high pressing game and created several opportunities of their own. Brennan Johnson and Taiwo Awoniyi were particularly lively upfront, causing problems for the City backline.

Despite their positive showing, Forest’s finishing let them down. They spurned several promising chances, particularly in the second half, and ultimately paid the price for their profligacy. This result leaves them precariously placed in the relegation zone, just a point above the drop.

For City, the win was more about grit than style. Pep Guardiola’s men looked sluggish at times, and their usually fluid attacking play was often stifled by a determined Forest side. However, the experience and quality within the City squad shone through when it mattered most. The introduction of Haaland not only provided a focal point in attack but also injected a sense of urgency into their play.

With a game in hand over Arsenal, City technically control their own destiny in the title race. However, their unconvincing display against Forest raises questions about their ability to sustain a winning run over the remaining fixtures. They face several challenging matches in the coming weeks, and any slip-ups could prove costly.

For Arsenal, the pressure remains firmly on their shoulders. While they will be pleased to see City dropping points, they cannot afford to relax. The Gunners face a crucial North London derby against Tottenham next weekend, a match that could significantly impact the title race.
