Kenyan football clubs Gor Mahia and Kenya Police FC have successfully qualified for the CAF Confederations Cup Round One after impressive victories over their respective opponents.
Gor Mahia secured a dramatic comeback, defeating Sudanese side Al Merriekh 5-1 at a semi-packed Nyayo National Stadium. Despite losing the first leg 1-0 in Sudan, Gor Mahia turned the tie around with a dominant performance. Al Merriekh took an early lead in the 8th minute, extending their aggregate advantage to 2-0. However, Christopher Ochieng’ quickly equalized for Gor Mahia three minutes later. Alpha Onyango then put Gor Mahia ahead with a goal in the 22nd minute, providing a crucial lifeline.
Before the half-time break, newcomer Alphonse Omija extended Gor Mahia’s lead, and Rooney Onyango sealed the victory with two late goals, ensuring Gor Mahia’s progression in the CAF Championships.
In Ethiopia, Kenya Police FC advanced after a 1-0 win over Ethiopian Coffee SC. Defender Rashid Toha scored a header in the first half, securing the team’s place in the next round. The first leg in Kenya had ended in a 0-0 draw, making the win a critical achievement.
Notably, Kenya Police’s women’s team and KWPL reigning champions Police Bullets Fc were in the stands to support their male counterparts as they’re also in Ethiopia for CAF CECAFA qualifiers which they have qualified for the semi final and will be facing Simba Queens of Tanzania tomorrow morning.
Gor Mahia will face Al Ahly of Egypt in their Round One fixture, while Kenya Police FC will go up against the reigning CAF champions, Zamalek FC. The first leg of these matchups is scheduled between September 13th and 15th, with the second leg set to take place between September 20th and 22nd, 2024.
